Chrome for Android now supports using third-party password managers for autofill, improving user experience and personalization. Enable a hidden flag to choose your system password manager over Google’s.
Chrome for Android Now Supports Third-Party Password Managers
Google’s Chrome browser for Android now allows users to utilize non-Google password managers for autofill functionality, enhancing user experience and personalization options. This new setting, although currently hidden behind an experimental flag, is functional in the stable version of Chrome.
While the feature is available across stable, Beta, and Canary versions, some additional development is still required, as users are not yet prompted to save new passwords using third-party managers.
Enabling Non-Google Password Managers in Chrome for Android
To enable this feature, users need to navigate to the “chrome://flags/#enable-autofill-virtual-view-structure” flag and enable it. Once enabled, go to Chrome Settings > Autofill options, and select “Use other providers.” Chrome will then default to the system-wide password manager chosen under Android Settings > Passwords & accounts > Passwords, passkeys, and data services.
Although users can now populate passwords from non-Google password managers, the process of saving new passwords still requires additional work, as evidenced by the lack of prompts for saving new passwords during testing.
Improving Browser Choice on Android
While Google Chrome is pre-installed on most Android devices, alternative browsers like Firefox, with their extension support and anti-tracking features, have been enticing users to explore options beyond the default. Chrome’s lack of support for non-Google password managers was another potential reason for users to consider switching browsers. However, this new hidden setting could help level the playing field, allowing users to enjoy the convenience of their preferred password manager while using Chrome.
4 months ago I showed a new section in Chrome for Android that lets you use other providers to autofill passwords, this feature now works and if you choose the “Use other providers” option, Chrome no longer shows you suggestions from its password manager:https://t.co/Uvgqr181vs pic.twitter.com/leDXe2Lhnx
